Things to Know Before Purchasing Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance

Don’t let the additional cost of travel insurance discourage you from the making the investment, the peace of mind alone that it grants is more than worth the monetary investment. The trip you’ve been dreaming about for years shouldn’t have to be affected by circumstances that are out of your control.

According to a recent report from AAA, 38% of Americans are likely to purchase a travel insurance policy for future international trips. That is more than a 20% increase over the past year. If you’re planning on purchasing a policy for a future trip, there are a few steps you should take prior to buying.

Begin by familiarizing yourself with the types of coverage available. These include but are not limited to medical, trip protection, and flight insurance. Of these insurances, trip protection is the most common and is included in just about every comprehensive policy. This insurance will cover circumstances such as you or your travel partner getting sick, a legal obligation, and other factors.

When it comes to medial insurance, you’ll first need to figure out whether you need to purchase a plan designed to cover pre-existing medical conditions. These plans typically cover the cost of an ambulance, hospital services and provide around the clock emergency assistance.

Flight insurance is meant exclusively for any difficulties that may arise regarding your flight. Typically these policies are purchased for international trips due to the higher fare costs. Flight insurance can help with saving on the cost of delay fees or a cancellation due to bad weather or a mechanical issue with the aircraft.

When traveling abroad you don’t want any surprises so it’s imperative that you read your policy in its entirety so you know what’s included, any restrictions, or what may not be covered. When news of the Zika virus began to grow, many Americans were unaware that their standard travel insurance policies did not cover trip cancellation due to a heightened outbreak risk.

So, it doesn’t hurt to do your research, and if you are still confused on which policy to buy and what it will cover, you can call us at 888-301-9289 or use the live chat feature on our website to talk with one of our customer service representatives! -Fill out and have your chef card on hand.

-Pack safe snacks and treats.

-Bring wipes for surfaces and your hands.

-Make sure the other travelers know what to do in case of an emergency.

-Research dining options before your trip.

-Call ahead to the restaurant and ask to speak to a manager or chef about their policies regarding food allergies.

-Find places to stay with a microwave and refrigerator so that you can safely warm up and store safe foods.

-Inspect your room/hotel once you arrive for loose food or old residue.

Traveling With Your Pets

Traveling With Pets

Are you planning on doing any end of the year traveling? If so, one thing you may need to consider is what to do about your pet should you have plans of bringing him/her along. Thankfully, flying with your four-legged friend is easier than ever as the majority of airlines are quite animal friendly. However, each airline has regulations regarding pet rules so make sure you thoroughly research them prior to booking your trip.

Most airlines will allow you to bring along your pet as either checked or carry-on luggage. You may already have a pet carrier that you prefer to keep your fur baby in, but make sure that it is okay to use and that it meets the specific regulations, so you don’t run into any surprises when you show up at the airport. Guidelines will vary but, in most cases, pets traveling as carry-on luggage will be required to go underneath the seat for the duration of the flight in a soft carrier. Larger pets traveling as cargo will be required to fly in a non-collapsible carrier and they must have plenty of water available.

With the increase of travelers bringing along their pets, hotels are increasingly providing pet friendly options as well. Major chains like the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons will roll out the red carpet for your four-legged friend but again, make sure to read policies before booking your stay. You will also be required to pay an additional fee for your pet to stay with you.

Before you and your pet leave for your trip, take the time to prepare for unforeseen medical emergencies. Research any emergency vet clinics in or near your destination in case you find yourself having to take your pet to an animal doctor. Also, look into getting travel insurance for your pet! We can cover you AND your pet with our Safe Travels First Class policy.
